Alicia Scherson’s The Future captures the strange ways we mourn, cope with and survive tragedy, while also bringing us into a world of old movies, tired heroes, ancient Rome, contemporary Europe, bodybuilders, hair-dressers and the distant future.

Based on the last published novel by Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, the story opens with teen siblings Bianca (Manuela Martelli) and Tomas (Luigi Ciardo), who are suddenly orphaned when their parents die in a car crash. Unsure of what to do, they quickly fall into the wrong crowd, and find themselves roped into an unlikely heist, where Bianca is to be used as bait to initiate a sexual relationship with a rich hermit. But the more time they spend together in his dark, abandoned mansion, the more Bianca becomes attracted and entranced by his storied past. With exceptional performances by the young Italian actors and iconic Rutger Hauer (Blade Runner, Sin City), The Future is a hypnotic, genre-bending coming-of-age tale that is at times sensual, subtle and suspenseful.
