Posing as a war photographer and embedding himself with a family immersed in intergenerational warfare, exiled Syrian filmmaker Talal Derki’s follows up his award-winning RETURN TO HOMS (played at Calgary Film 2014) with another riveting portrait of his decimated homeland.

For more than two years, Derki lived with Abu Osama, an Al-Nusra fighter in a remote village in Northern Syria. Osama’s dedication to his beliefs are inculcating his children to follow in his footsteps. As his young sons are radicalized at a jihadist camp where they literally jump through hoops of fire, this Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning documentary contrasts the horrors of war with devotion to family.
