Lily Franky (SHOPLIFTERS, CIFF 2018) stars as Utsugi, a 69-year-old recovering from a stroke that has left him paralyzed on his left side and dependent on the care of his sister-in-law, Hana, and daughter-in-law, Susu. When a family holiday takes Hana away, Utsugi and Susu are left alone together, and an unlikely intimacy begins to emerge. Amid suspicion, extravagance, and the occasional flirtatious gesture, the two discover a surprising connection that unsettles the boundaries of family and propriety.

From THE JOY LUCK CLUB to SMOKE to COMING HOME AGAIN, Wayne Wang has long explored unlikely friendships and the complicated dynamics of family life. With his latest film, he turns his attention to the quiet spaces between what we feel and what we reveal, crafting a delicate, gently comic portrait of two people discovering a connection neither expected.
