Seven time Academy Award-nominated writer-director and Palme d’Or winner Mike Leigh (ANOTHER YEAR, CIFF 2010) returns to the festival with a tender, sharply observed portrait of ordinary lives under extraordinary pressure. Amy (Kate O’Flynn, recently Emmy nominated for her role on WIDOW’S BAY) is a devoted government child protection worker who pours herself into caring for others, even as her own life begins to unravel. Following a failed relationship, she moves in with her lifelong friend Rosie, whose work in social services brings its own daily encounters with anger and resentment. Meanwhile, Amy’s aging parents must confront a crisis of their own.
With characteristic wit and compassion, Leigh explores the challenges of aging, family and Britain’s fractured care system, finding humour and humanity in life’s quiet struggles. Anchored by two remarkable performances, TENDER LOVING CARE is a poignant, unflinchingly honest celebration of friendship, resilience and the people who help us through the difficult times.
