Inspired by an award-winning Los Angeles Times article by Frank Shyong, ROSEMEAD depicts a culture rarely seen in film: the Chinese diaspora in L.A.’s San Gabriel Valley. Reckoning with a myriad of urgent social issues, it is ultimately a heart-wrenching story about a mother’s love for her son and the lengths she would go to protect him.
Irene (Lucy Liu, KILL BILL VOL.1 & 2) came to the U.S. chasing the American dream, found love, and had a beautiful boy named Joe (newcomer Lawrence Shou). When cancer abruptly claims her husband, Irene struggles to hold on to the life they’ve made as Joe struggles with schizophrenia. She hides his condition from her friends, but with Joe’s mental state deteriorating, Irene must race against her own failing health to ensure he can have a future where he is not at risk of hurting himself or others.
