Preceded by the short film: MANGO
UNDER THE BURNING SUN is an abortion horror showcasing a dystopian future of a post-Roe v. Wade America. The backdrop of a MAD MAX-style wasteland further echoes the difficulties women face in the pursuit of being in control of their bodies. Filmmaker Yun Xie’s feature film debut is as kinetic and futuristic as it is poignant for the current era. With its beautiful sets and breakneck pace, it’s no surprise UNDER THE BURNING SUN was the Audience Award Winner at the Slamdance Film Festival.
In an anti-abortion barren realm, Mowanza encounters several obstacles in terminating her unwanted pregnancy. Learning that another nation called Iropus has a lenient abortion policy, she decides to forge ahead with nothing but a half-empty water bottle and a beat-up car. On her journey, Mowanza comes across many other women who struggle with similar fates at the hands of the men who make the decisions.
