Director Amy Wang will be in attendance at the September 20 screening.
In her feature film debut, director Amy Wang crafts a world where racial identity and Big Tech collide in ways so absurd, they become almost comical. Shirley Chen and McKenna Grace (TROOP ZERO, CIFF 2019) share the spotlight—and a single body—in this SXSW Grand Jury Prize winner that lingers in your mind long after the credits roll.
SLANTED follows Joan Huang, a Chinese-American teen growing up in the 2010s American South, as she grapples with racism and cultural conflict. At age eight, she’s bullied for being different. By seventeen, obsessed with fitting in, she sets her sights on becoming prom queen—undergoing extreme transformations, from dyeing her hair to considering racial modification surgery, all in pursuit of a "white" ideal. Her desperate quest for acceptance alienates her from friends and family, offering a sharp satire on assimilation and white-worship, while capturing the tragicomic struggle for self-worth.
