Having premiered MIRRORS NO. 3 in this year’s Directors’ Fortnight lineup at Cannes, German auteur Christian Petzold (UNDINE, CIFF 2020; TRANSIT, CIFF 2018; BARBARA, CIFF 2012) returns to CIFF with this intimate, intrigue-filled psychodrama about unhealed trauma.
On a weekend trip to the countryside, Laura (Paula Beer, UNDINE, CIFF 2020; TRANSIT, CIFF 2018), a piano student from Berlin, miraculously survives a car crash. Physically unhurt but deeply shaken, she is taken in by a local woman, Betty (Barbara Auer, TRANSIT, CIFF 2018), who witnessed the accident and now cares for Laura with motherly devotion. When her husband and adult son give up their initial resistance to Laura's presence, the four of them slowly build up a family-like routine and spend some days of happiness together. But soon they can no longer ignore their past, and Laura must come to terms with her own life.
