With this adaption of STREET LEGEND, the rags-to-riches autobiography of Mikuru Asakura, director Takashi Miike (AUDITION, CIFF 2001; DEAD OR ALIVE, CIFF 2002) combines the traditional boxing film with a coming-of-age sports action drama.
When Ryoma first meets Ikuto in a juvenile detention centre, he strikes up a friendship without realizing that his seemingly easygoing fellow inmate is in fact the fiercest fighter in the joint. When famous MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura drops in to deliver a motivational speech, he inspires the two boys to follow the same path he did, out of the cycle of crime and into the ring—hopefully, as competitors in Asakura’s popular Breaking Down tournament. Getting there will mean training hard, contending with family entanglements, and battling their way through bloody, bare-knuckled brawls.
