When an overeager artist (Matt Barats) proposes to his Broadway-bound girlfriend, her request that they “take space” sends him into a fit of self-reflection and nostalgia. Impulsively moving onto a sailboat moored near a New York airport, the jilted lover seeks solace in a stack of home movies, only to confront his arrested adolescence—and the creeping fear that he might indeed be a loveless loser.

As his anxiety festers, a series of increasingly surreal vignettes finds him wrestling with loneliness, alienation and the humiliations of existence, all narrated by Barats with deadpan comic precision. Blending essayistic filmmaking, shaggy comedy and painfully awkward observations, writer-director Barats turns a breakup into a strange, hilarious and unexpectedly tender journey of self-discovery.
